Recycled filament from Marine fishing nets lost in the Mediterranean

The plastics that we find on the surface are only the tip of the iceberg, since they represent less than 15% of all the plastics in the sea.

In the Mediterranean we also find a large amount of microplastics, similar to those in plastic "soups". In fact, between 21% and 54% of all microplastic particles in the world are found in the Mediterranean basin. 

During investigations carried out by Greenpeace in 2015, an average of 320 garbage objects for every 100 meters of beach sampled in Spain, with 75% of these wastes being plastic objects. Every day 30 million cans and plastic bottles continue to be abandoned in Spain, which go on to contaminate our land, coastal and marine environment.

We are not aware of the reality that is happening with the amount of plastic waste and the time of its decomposition, being the marine nets discarded in the sea one of the most polluting due to its slow decomposition and we can do something.

1. Collection and separation

The separation process is key to the quality of the Filament. Each type of net has a specific melting temperature and the mixture of these materials would compromise the quality of the final product.

2. Shredded and chemical dissolution

Chemical recycling consists of the depolymerization of plastics either in monomers or in low molecular weight raw materials. In the first possibility, the monomers can be used again for polymerization, which is known as alcoholics. In the second case, known as pyrolysis, the raw materials can be used for different types of chemical reactions including the production of polymers.

3. Pellet manufacturing and extrusion control

Obtained the raw pellet, it is introduced into the filament extruder to manufacture the thread in a homogeneous way and achieve a quality filament, without impurities and with tolerances that do not exceed 0.03 mm for easy printing on domestic printers, hence its difficulty. because in most cases this compound is used to manufacture parts by injection in molds in an industrial way.
